Posted - 29 Apr 2011 : 09:35:17 AM I congratulate the AFL on their success in gaining a monopoly of TV air time. However how will other sports ever get coverage and grow? Simple pleasures such as cycle and motorcycle racing, club level motor sport, and all of the other team sports - how will they ever get onto the air waves? This obsession with aerial ping-pong, surely the attraction must fade after we get thousands of hours of it? Or are we so susceptible to indoctrination, that we will never get enough? I wonder how many footy fans have ever actually played the game? VOUYERISM IS NOT PARTICIPATION! |

Posted - 05 May 2011 : 10:17:01 AM Alan, you need to open your eyes too pal. Our customer base should be as broad as possible. The baseball cap Commodore set, if they have any bike interest, seems to be mx and freestyle - well done to those disciplines with a cohesive plan. I repeat, bikes are not mainstream. Cars, bogan involvement or not, have critical mass. Yes bikes are a true spectacle. Yes we need to be doing much better overall. Yes its disturbing and woeful that the Vic Titles have no attendance of note. Bike racing is too fragmented. Events like Easter nats in a regional area are going to pull a big crowd, equivalent to say the Island Classic, its the intrinsic nature of the event - a niche event. I'm sure that equivalent club level car events, commensurate with the vic titles, Hartwell etc, is equally spectator free. Lastly, I'm stil waiting for a few answers on previous questions to you, such as the future plans for Winton as a facility. |

Posted - 05 May 2011 : 08:29:19 AM It is interesting (and worrying) that the only local events to pull a decent crowd are the Island Classic and the Broadford Bonanza. Why is it so?

Posted - 05 May 2011 : 06:30:12 AM Our customer base should be the young guys who wear the baseball caps and drive VN commodores. If we wait for 'Joe Average and his family', we'll be waiting a long time. Come and have a look at 'performance car mania' some time. It's so bad that it's good. The kids do burnouts, blow their tyres, then drive back to the pits bumping along on the expensive alloy rims. Money is no object to them. And what they are doing is garbage, but they love it, and it pulls a crowd of other dills who've got no taste! |

Posted - 05 May 2011 : 06:23:12 AM Jason, there's nothing 'appealing' about bike road race meetings with no supporters paying for part of the costs. I've been to the last three road race meetingws run by PMCC and the spectator areas were virtually empty. I also went to the Easter Nats the other day, and found a full house even though they were charging $50 per day entry. I suggest we need to change our mindset dramatically or we will disappear. We are aleady the poor cousins to the car racing fraternity. You say you are a realist, I think you should open your eyes. Go and have a look at an AVESCO event some time. It's nearly the equivalent of taxi racing, yet it pulls a really big crowd, and costs a bomb to get through the gate, it's boring crap! Motorcycle road racing is not bullsh*t - we REALLY RACE, and the car guys cannot claim that about their sport! |

Posted - 04 May 2011 : 4:46:17 PM Tut-tut Alan, really, I have lots of hope. But I'm also a realist. Superb racing happens whether crowds are there or not and yes it is disappointing more aren't there to see it - but then this is old ground for us, you have to appreciate more fully that people have a lot more diverse and distractions competing for their time and money. Venues could also be a lot more savvy and progressive about what people want and need there - while a hard core will always revel in tramping through dirt, standing up all day and eating overpriced fat, joe average and his family aren't going to be enticed more than once if there isn't more to offer them, no matter how superb the racing is.

YES I'd like to see it another way! -A very short time ago bikes were pulling decent crowds ans we saw superb racing with real stars! If you want to be a no-hoper, that's your business! |

Posted - 04 May 2011 : 4:11:03 PM What other sport/hobby combination enables people to build a machine, and then use iit as intended. The guys who build the toy trains then ride around on rails must like it. And the guys who build ultralight planes probably get a kick out of it. But I don't think anything really compares with racing classic motorcycles? My young brother just spent six months building a 600cc Jawa speedway outfit. Took it to Broadford two weeks ago, and blew off two 1000cc Vincents and a 650cc Triumph in the final race of the day. It just happened that the track had just been watered and regraded, and the Jawa had drive where the others didn't. He got a standing ovation from the crowd, and his wife and two kids who usually never go to meetings, were absolutely stoked. Tell me another activity that can provide that? |

Posted - 03 May 2011 : 8:12:08 PM just proves what most of us that do stuff are in the minority .I only have to listen to the majority that are experts every monday morning at work after a full weekend of sofa sport.Very exciting!!!!.A weekend at your local racetrack is a whole lot harder to do but I think its better wear out than rust out on the sofa

No way it's even thought of as a National sport in either NSW or QLD. It always gives me a chuckle that the AFL select an 'Australian' team every year but there's no other team for them to play!!! |
