G'day to everybody. Just thought I would introduce myself and seek a little advice from you learned gents.
We have been cobbling together a P4 Sidecar for a while now. It's been an interesting experience as Pat (my mate & passenger) and myself have no road racing credentials what so ever, other than the occasional trip down to Philip Island for the GP every now and then. Back in our younger days if you wheren't covered in dirt oil and crap at the end of the day it wasn't real racing. Well that and the fact that there's not much tar out this way to drive on let alone race on.
Anyway Introductions. Name; Brian Williams Address; Yanco in southern NSW. Occupation; Publican.
Yes, thats right I own a Pub. Yes I have two daughters. No you can't marry them.
We've reached a stage with the bike another 20hrs work will see it ready to turn a wheel. We are using 13" wheels and I hope some of you gentlemen would be kind enough to offer an opinion on what tires may be appropriate and where we may be able to source them.
Cheers, Brian

Protenzas are the better ones. "Stuckeys" are a supplier here. Perhaps you may find some car buff who has some old ones as many cars use them for racing. PS would you be ablre to make it to the Vic. Titles at Broadford 29 / 30 March 2008? |

Now where is Yanco? Southern NSW is big! Any chance of getting some mates involved? Where will you be learning? |

Bear, John made a slight typo - the tyres are actually Bridgestone "Potenzas" but Stuckey's would know that. Stuckey's are at: 828 Sydney Road, BRUNSWICK VIC 3056 Ph: (03) 9386-5331. See their web site at You must be logged in to see this link. You could probably get the tyres through your local Bridgestone dealer but Stuckey's would probably be good for "performance advice". Have fun, go fast.

Hi Guys,
Yokohama make a suitable tyre in proper race compound and are very good, cant remember the number but can check it out if you want, I think it might be 032 or similar. If you can use a low profile tyre then without a doubt the best you can get are Avon Formula Ford tyres. Your local car race guys can put you on to them.

John Yanco is the "Gateway to the Murrumbidgee Irrigation Area". We are about 5 min out of a town called Leeton. Thats between Griffith 50km and Wagga 90km away. Mates? Yep I've got one or two. At the moment the've just been hanging around the shed drinking my beer and offering all sorts of useless advice. I don't know if they can compete with Bondy's crew but I'm shore they can add a little colour to the sean. Check them out.

Hopefully we will be able to organize track time down at Broadford, or if not maybe Wakefield.

John, Bummers, Alan Thanks for the feedback on the tiers. I got on to Russell Stuckey. The Potenzers aren't available any more so it was a toss up between a Dunlop DZ03G and an Avon ACB10. Now I'm not a tight ass but the Avons where $100 a unit dearer so I've ordered the Dunlops.
Mick Sorry mate, ones to old for you and the other's to young. Never mind though, drop in next time your in the neigborhood and I'll shout you a beer. You can earn your beer though. How can I go about getting a screen made for the fairing on this thing?
Cheers, Brian

Hey Brian,
Don't if it's any help to you or not but we bought an P4 outfit from a guy in Wagga, his name is John Dawes. I understand he has bought a new machine and is going to race it somewhere/sometime. He might be willing to show you around or give you some tips, let me know and I'll send you the contact details that I have. Secondly ..... Don't be worried about Bondy's mates ..... we are all good blokes (I know some might disagree with that ... hahahahaha) and are more than willing to help fellow sidecar racers, you just gotta ask oh and pay for the beer ......
Cheers

Ah Ha, another newby, does that mean that Buck and I are now considered not so new?? Bear, like Bretta said, you only have to ask for help and it comes. Buck and I had our first outing at the island, with no luck at all I might add, but the help came thick and fast (just can't remember it all). One tip, we have had no end of trouble with castor wobble on our front end. One theory is that our wheels, 12", might be too tall? Worth considering if you encounter the same problem with 13". Oh yer, Pink outfits rule!!!!!!! Cheers, Buck and Peen |

It wont be the wheel size causing the problem unless someone has changed it to 12 from either 10 or 13 for some weird reason. Sidecars are strange things and dont behave as they should most of the time. I had a huge problem this time last year and solved it by changing the steering head angle after I had tried everything else. It doesnt take much to be wrong to give you a problem but it can take a lot of head aches to cure. Just work through all the different parameters until you get it working. Start with all the usual things like tyre pressures, wheel bearings, wheel balance, wheel alignments, sidecar toe in/toe out, and if all else fails measure your steering head angle and also check that the head is actually perpendicular. One other thing to check is that all wheels are sitting vertical when the sidecar is on level ground, obviously the front wheel needs to be pointed straight ahead. At the end of the day logic will prevail but you may need a lot of patience and/or beer. If you want to chat about it and cant find someone local to you to help let me know and I will call you on the phone.

Thanks Alan. The outfit has always had the 12" wheels on it, but the tyres are different (last raced late sixties). We are slowly working on each suggestion and getting improvement all the time. I'll let you konw if we need to talk, but thanks again for your help. Cheers, Buck & Peen (Robert & Tony) |

Wheel size isnt as important as some think. While the contact patch is bigger on a 13 as against a 10, riding skill is far more important. The Wanneroo lap record for period 4 is held by Mark Lewis who ran a H2 outfit on 10 inch tyres and very close to him was Neville Lush but cant remember what he was running at the time, incidentally Neville built and tuned Marks engine. Mark used to use Hoosier mini race tyres which did work very well, I must add that he spent a lot of time and money on his bike which also helps a lot. By the sound of it there will be a few of you coming over in November so hopefully someone can get close to the record or maybe beat it. It will be very interesting I am sure.

Mick I assume you just need a pic of the fairing. The bikes naked at the moment, all the glass is of getting painted. I have an early pic of the bike with the glass straight out of the mold. That do ya.
Doug I get down your way pretty often. I have a daughter living in Albury. We'll have to catch up at some stage. Would you know a bloke by the name of Pete McGregor? We used to swap paint fairly often when Pat and I punted speedway chairs around Vic in the 90's
Cheers, Brian
