Does anyone have any contacts for the Nationals in Tassy this year? I'm trying to organise some accommodation, and local knowledge would be helpful. (Simmons Plains were conspicuous by their lack of help!!!)
Also, I believe that there is a meeting the following weekend to the nationals at Baskeville.? Anyone have any knowledge of it?
Cheers, Tony.

A bit of repetitous info to start:
Nationals at Symmons Plains (Launceston) - 19 - 20 November 2011.
Tassy Historic Champs - 26 - 27 Nov 2011 at Baskerville (Hobart).
Baskerville has trailer/van storage, and limited camping/facilities, presumably at a cost.
I am waiting on further details re accommodation for both circuits which I'll post as soon as I get it.
Also did a check on costs for the Ferry across and back, with a 4 berth cabin, for 4. Works out to be approx $2100. That's also with a ute and trailer.(We're taking our respective bosses for a holiday as well)
I'll post more as and when it comes to hand. Cheers, Tony.

Last time (2005) we went to Symmons we were allowed to camp at the track and it was a fantastic meeting. Tasmanians are very friendly people and we brought home a number of contact details many of which we have remained in touch with. Facilities there were excellent too. Obviously the costs will have gone up a bit but the price for the ferry is worked out on total length of your rig (ie including the trailer). We chose not to get a cabin because it seemed like quite a lot extra to pay for a relatively short night in a small box. The cattle class was fine (especially when we worked out that there were a number of other places to sleep) and all we did was allow the next day for a snoozy sort of day to catch up on what we missed sleep wise. That ploy saved quite a few dollars. We took the bus over in 2005 and while the price we paid probably has no connection with today's prices we figured that we were way ahead based on savings in accommodation - especially if one is to stay in Tassie for a while, which you will if you are going to do both meetings. The other issue that provided much discussion last time was the issue of taking fuel over on the ferry. Apparently the rules state that fuel tanks on the bikes have to be empty and that you cannot carry any fuel in drums. Oh and they also take gas bottles off of caravans etc and put them all on one trolley in the middle of the boat (???). However, on the bus our gas bottle is a very large one and bolted in place - just like every car that is on gas - and we did not have to empty the fuel tanks on the bus or indeed I did not see them emptying tanks on cars! So why the rule on bikes in trailers I have no idea... I do know that fuel was a bit of a hassle over there and indeed we lost 40 litres because the guy decided to go home before we got it around Sunday lunch time. Sorry for the long post but I just thought it might be worth highlighting some of the good things and some of the questionable things so that people can consider the questions they need to ask for themselves. We are definitely planning on going 'coz we had a fantastic time over there last time. :-)

Thanks Geoff, great info to have.
We are definitely going come hell or high water, and will be staying over for both events. Both our significant others are going as well, so a slightly higher level of sumptuous accommodation is required (Read: tents are not acceptable!!). Might actually get them to come and watch us at the track?? I agree that Taswegians are wonderful people, just like all Australians, how could they be otherwise living in such a beautiful state!! We run on pump fuel so that's not an issue for us. Latest check on prices for the ferry for us will be around $1600 return. Cheers, Tony

I will bring the fuel questions up at the next committee and get back to you !
As for fuel in bikes on the boat , we travel over every year and have always had fuel in the tank , have never been asked to remove it as yet !
Any other questions , just ask and i will try to answer them .

cheers Holma .

Revhd , we travel over every year and have never been asked to empty our bikes of fuel ! I allways put 10 ltrs in before i leave tassy for thursday's practice session. I have bought fuel drums before , they are ok if they dont smell of fuel or new ones . They have said that you can bring them full of water but then you need to empty and dry before putting fuel in them ! BUT: If you bring a boat , you can have a plastic floor fuel drum with fuel it , work that out ! We will be having fuel delivered to the track so you wont need to bring drums , we will be putting a letter on the website when this is all sorted out .
Once things get sorted we will update the website at: You must be logged in to see this link.
Cheers Holma ..

If you have a van to go to Tassie, I found out today that there is considerable savings on the vehicle costs on the Spirit of Tas. if your van is a "Campervan". It needs to have a fixed bed & kitchen facilities to qualify.

There is also supposed to be a further (10% I think) if you book through TasVacations for the Historic Champs. But when I tried to find out about this today the lady looking after it (Rachel) was away till after Easter & no one else seemed able to help - You must be logged in to see this link.

Hi Bummer - et al.

I am looking forward to heading to Tassie for the National Historic Titles at Symons Plains and then the Tassie Historic Titles the following weekend at Baskerville…

Further to your information above, I have spent quite a lot of time on the phone in the past few weeks trying to work out some logistics re getting there and back.

For everyone’s information here is where I am at the moment with getting cars / trailers to Tassie for the Titles for myself plus a few others...

Almost every car / van (i.e.: transit hiace sprinter mwb) that travels via the Sprit of Tasmania ( You must be logged in to see this link.) is in the ball park of $ 79 - $100 ea way..... Example a 2003 long wheel base high roof transit (+2.1mteres) is only $ 85 ea way.

Where some folks are going to fall in a hole is if they are towing a trailer...

On the sprit of Tassie the trailer cost for a 3-4 metre trailer (that’s from the tow ball to the end of the trailer) is approximately $400.00 each way.... Yes you read it right $400 ea way just for the trailer...

I have spoken with Rachael from TasVactions whom tell me “there is NO discount for Trailers at all”

Since I found this out I have been speaking with Fred Bassel for Motorcycling Tas and I have been on the phone to the 2 companies that run freight across bass straight Toll/ANL and Sea Road freight..

For everyone’s info they have a freight rate to take any freight across.

So drop your trailer off at port Melbourne and pick it up in Devonport.

Here are the sums:

Toll / ANL ....

$115 per lineal metre or part there off
Plus 9.2% fuel surcharge...based on today’s figures
Plus 10 % GST
Plus inbound to Tassie a Quarantine payment of $12.00

So for ANL/Toll a 4 metre trailer is $ 550... Each way

Sea Road
$ 120 per lineal metre or part there off SOUTH BOUND
$ 80 per lineal metre or part there off NORTH BOUND
Plus 9.2% fuel surcharge...based on today’s figures
Plus 10 % GST
Plus inbound to Tassie a Quarantine payment of $12.00

So again for a Sea road for a 4 Metre Trailer is

South bound $ 585...
North Bound $ 385....

I have been speaking with centre link regarding what’s called the Tasmanian Freight Equalization Scheme...

You must be logged in to see this link." target="_blank">http://You must be logged in to see this link.

Which is how they guys from Targa Tassie and the V8 Supercars get their freight across at the right prices.... But I seams as Amateurs and not receiving any Prize Money at the Historic Titles we don’t qualify.

See this section here:
You must be logged in to see this link." target="_blank">http://You must be logged in to see this link.

I hope with this posting someone somewhere can help with some other options on getting trailers across...for I fear when people workout that its going to cost them $ 600 - $ 1000... Just in freight for their trailers they aren’t going to likely to be heading to Magical Tassie for the National and or Staying on for the Tassie Historic Titles.. I know for me that $ 800 was going to be our Accommodation monies

Regards to All

Darren

I think the Nationals just went CRASHHHHHHHHHHH.

Most people use trailers. Frankly its cheaper to go to WA or even Darwin.

What about disconnecting the trailer and calling it a car and paying for two cars

That sounds like a blatant rip off to me.
Go van or don't go at all would seem to be the go.
What do they charge for a solo bike?
Maybe offload the bike and ship it over and hire a trailer in Tassie?
Perhaps hire one big van and load several trailers in the van for the crossing?
Lateral thinking called for.

I just started loking for an old cheap transit van sell it when i get back, trailers are out.
Tassie club should be talking to the ferry about some discounts, if the Targa Rich boys and there toys can get it what about bike racing amatuers, does not make sense ,seems like not what u known but who you know at play here

Probably worth repeating at this stage that there's a Tassie Titles meeting mooted the following weekend at Baskerville run by the Sports Riders Club of Tasmania, further details @ You must be logged in to see this link. .
If you're going through all the pain, pus and expense of getting down there, you'd be mad not to stay an extra week for a crack at the Baskerville Circuit, the topography alone makes it a must-see !

Regardless, it seems that the Nationals will be in trouble. Darren has already checked out the alternatives, including my previous suggestion. It seems the poor old Tasmanians are really getting ripped off, I do feel sorry for them. Nevertheless the Nats are rapidly becoming undooable.

Considering the number of people that went to the meeting last time it was in Tassie, it seems a bit strange there can be no support.

bit early for the doomsday predictions, traditionally it all happens in the last few weeks,it was a good time had by all last time,no reason why this one won't be the same, trailers have always been exccy,it's the length, over 3mtrs wides another price hike too, rent a truck/van,my van took 6 bikes last time ,biggest bummer is no sydney ferry, out of staters are looking at fuel bill just to get to the ferry,we filled bike tanks up,no fuel drums but,av gas at the lonnie aiport,(unless MA's screwed us there too??),be there or be square,

Hi Guys, there has been a lot of discussion about getting to Tasmania and the simple solution is to get yourselves organised as a group and send a container over it lands at the track and all you have to do is to fly in and unload it. Our travellers from WA do it all the time and it is the most cost effective way of travelling. The club in Tasmania helped with a forklift to unload and crates can be had for nothing from bike shops so it really is the easy way around the problem.
As has been said by many the last meeting there was fantastic and there is no reason to suspect this wouldnt be the same.

Hi all , i have just dug out my paperwork from January when we traveled to Phillip Island for the Island classic . The first leg from Tas to Melbourne including a Twin bed ( two people ) , Porthole cabin with Exclusive Occupancy, Commodore Ute ( with two bikes and all our gear for 5 days ) was a total of $ 599.00 . This was a Peak period price .

The second leg from Melbourne to Tas was exactly the same inclusions, but a total cost of $ 377.00 .
This leg was a NON Peak period price.

Total cost $ 976.00.

Hi Guys as a follow on from my previous posting, 20-April 2011. I have spent quite a bit of time on this and trying to get the rates down for those that Want to, or need to Travel with a Trailer/Caravan,

As I mention in my earlier post, and in Holma’s post above the price on getting a Car / Ute and most Vans (transit/sprinter etc etc onto the Sprit of Tassie is about $79 - $ 100 max each way. ( You must be logged in to see this link.)

I have been speaking with Fred Bessel and Paddy Marshall from Motorcycling Tassie quite regularly and they were hoping to be able to negotiate a special rate for getting bikes there via trailers with one of the Shipping companies, unfortunately as of today, no joy.. Paddy suggests that those that need to get together and pack a container and have it sent to Symons...

I have since the last posting been in discussions with Centrelink regarding the Tasmanian Freight Equalization Scheme...T.F.E.S

You must be logged in to see this link."

Which is how they guys from Targa Tassie and the V8 Supercars get their freight across at the right prices....

From My discussion with them.

1: Centrelink will only look at the claim, after the trip is made, paid for, and completed.

2: Centrelink will only access the claim on its merits.

3: Some or partial cost of the Freight Portion ONLY may be paid for.

Problems with most of us travelling to Tassie making a claim from this scheme:
1: There is No Prize Money (one of the critiea)

2: We aren’t considered Entertainers

3: You Need an ABN / ACN

I have been told unofficially that should someone make a claim to Centrelink for the T.F.E.S for the Titles in November they would most Likely NOT get any payments returned. It’s up to you to try this form of recovering your costs....

So for you guy wanting to travel taking trailers/ caravans..There is a Calculator on the Sprit of Tassie web site...Make your booking with the dates in mind...

Don’t forget to work out your sailings making sure to stay the extra week and do the Tassie Historic Titles at Baskerville the following weekend.

As you go through you will have the option to enter your Trailer/Caravan dimensions etc...

If you decided not to use The Sprit for your freight I have been backwards and forwards with the freight companies I mentioned previous with No Joy getting better prices.

The details are the same as previously posted but are subject to changes with Fuel Excises etc.

Here are the sums:

Toll / ANL .... 1300 865 265

$115 per lineal metre or part there off
Plus 9.2% fuel surcharge...based on today’s figures
Plus 10 % GST
Plus inbound to Tassie a Quarantine payment of $12.00

So for ANL/Toll a 4 metre trailer is $ 550... Each way

Sea Road , Contact Ewan 03 64 20 44 03

$ 120 per lineal metre or part there off SOUTH BOUND
$ 80 per lineal metre or part there off NORTH BOUND
Plus 9.2% fuel surcharge...based on today’s figures
Plus 10 % GST
Plus inbound to Tassie a Quarantine payment of $12.00

So again for a Sea road for a 4 Metre Trailer is

South bound $ 585...
North Bound $ 385....

Hope this has been some help......See you all in Tassie....

Hi there,I've done my booking online and found that 2 adults traveling with a 6mtr motorhome towing a 4 mtr tralier with a recliner chair on the boat is costing me $1362 return to tassie. TasVacation could not offer me any type of discount on the fares as they will not undercut the online booking fares they will only discount their accomadation prices.

Ang, your price seems to fit. We are 4 adults, twin cab ute and trailer for about $1680 return. The ute and trailer costs us more than we, ourselves, do!! TasVacations quoted $1800 approx! I've also looked around for the entry/supp reg's and can't find anything either on the MT, TMC, or MA sites? (I lost my blonde hair years ago, so don't think that it still has an effect?)Anyone have any info? Cheers, Tony.

I've now been waiting for just over a week for a response to my e-mail from MT, TMC and MA about the Australian and Tassie titles in November, bloody hopeless!! Doesn't bode well for the events, or for us attending I'm guessing? WA will be a much better option I'm thinking, a hell of a lot further but cheaper, and the mob over there bend over backwards to help out! Cheers, Tony.
