In about 1960 I bought a Manx Norton from Geoff Monty.
My mate Brian, who delivered coal for a living and supplied transport on the back of his truck, was unable to help out with transport as he had managed to break a spring on the truck.
Being somewhat desperate I travelled to Geoff's shop by public transport and opted to ride the bike home, a trip of some 15 miles across London.
On the way home I got pulled over by plod who informed me that, in his opinion, my "silencer" did not have any baffles in it.
He had completely missed the fact that it was an unregistered race bike and was determined to book me for an unsilenced bike.
Fortunately it had a "pepper pot" megaphone and he was not able to see through the holes.
He removed the refill from his Biro and poked it through a hole in the end plate of the megaphone, quite delighted to inform me that he could not feel any baffles in there.
When he removed the refill he had only the metal end and ball, the ink tube had melted in the megaphone.
The look on his face was one to be remembered.
His parting words to me were rather rude.
The smile on my face was rather wide.

For those of you too young to remember when the Biro first came on the market it was not cheap. There was a grey market refilling the tubes with ink.
Melting his Biro would have hurt.
