I am just floating an idea.
Now the need to get log books for Historic racers has been accepted, I want to see if there is support for machines that are not kosher within the log book sysytem.
I am speaking of hand made overhead valve BSA, 8 valve Rudges and a miriad of specials that may have been built in the period , pre 63, or may have been made recently.
My thought is to have them race at Historic meetings against themselves, they would have no Aust Championship offered to them and the rules would be as loose as a baggy pair of trousers. Machines may be separated only by capacity or hair colour of the rider.
It may be fun, it may bring interesting stuff out and it may mean something is built to suit.

What are your thoughts please?

Now dont go on about potential options and combinations, just whether you know of a machine that would come out or if you would build a machine to suit.
Or if you wished I had said nothing because its too difficult?

Oh, right, I have no idea, of course.

To paraphrase Mr Rumsfeld, how would you know what I know and don't know?

Pray, do tell omniscient one, what are these changes, initiatives and vast improvements that elude me?

jason, you have no idea what goes on behind the scenes. Road racing generally is changing, and I believe the initiatives will be a vast improvement. The turn of historic racing must come.

Remind us what you've been doing for historic Racing Al (apart from denigrating it that is)

The BEARS have nothing to do with it.
Action from racers is now needed, it has to start at them now the idea has been floated.

Please do not suggest I am weak, I reckon I have done as much as any other person to promote Historic racing, I can stand by my record.

The silence on this topic has suddenly become deafening ! ! Was this last month's big idea which has now been dropped like a hot potato as soon as the BEARS were mentioned ? You are as weak as, Daley !

John, I'm really glad to see you thinking outside the square. I believe there is one rule which should be preserved - post 1972 bikes should not run alcohol !

Four valves per cylinder in a motor typically gives a ten per cent increase in horsepower, but in the end the rider has to be able to ride the bike fast.
I can't see a problem in allowing non-log booked bikes to run with the rest, but if they get a place, they should be excluded from the results.
Before I had my heart op, I raced historic Winton. I found that my main opposition was Alan Landers. He was riding a Hyde Harrier (70s) frame with a unit triumph motor in it. It was sort of authentic as raced in the UK in the 70s, uncompetitively. When the log books came in, MA refused to log book it in period 4, so Alan stopped racing it. I never had any issue racing against it, I loved the fact that it was the same TYPE of bike as my own, and to have a dog fight with it, was what racing was all about.
The old farts meetings have been very successful, for the reason that the bullsh1t is cut to the bone. You don't need a full license, or belong to a club, and you don't need a log book, just pay, turn up and race - good stuff !
I suggest it is essential that the bikes are log booked for championships, but every other time, they are a disincentive. Log books should be used to guarantee authenticity, otherwise they are a waste of time. I suggest that authenticity is not important at most historic meetings. The serious guys will still log book their bikes, the rest of us will come and have fun.

Who knows you might even get the BEARS racing againat historic mneetings if they can cross enter ?
I suggest we should do everything we reasonably can to grow the sport. It has so much potential!
Keep up the good work !

In Melbourne there are a number of them, maybe 12.
Many have been built well outside the period and cannot be retro fitted.
It is not envisaged as a new class that is compulsory, just a chance to have them recognised.
They always attract attention and they are engineering wonders.

Haven't we got enough periods/classes/categories already?
Haven't most of the "non kosher" bikes been built/modified to suit the existing rules? If they were built originally pre period cut-off they are eligible already.
If they have been built since then and are visually indistinguishable they are also eligible to be "log booked".
Do you think there would be many, other than drag bikes and land speed record bikes, that aren't running already or could be relatively easily modified to conform with existing classes?

If there is support, I will draft something to present.
I think they should race separately.
Actually we can run them now as "moderns" if we structure the supp regs correctly and they dont run methanol.

This could prove to be interesting.
Is the plan to allow them into existing races as "guests"?
Can this be done without running foul of M.A. rules?
