Hey folks,

I have just got my mitts on an R5 Yamaha 347cc piston ported two stroke, matching engine and frame no.s R5-028879. Anyone have a year of manufacture and useful info, the thing is 99% complete (good sidecovers and tank!!!!) with the engine in bits but rebuildable.

thanx in advance, someone must have knowledge of these things.

I cant help with specific details but they are eligible for Period 4 or at least one of our club members has one Log Booked and he rode it at Winton. If you want to ask some specific questions I can find out from him what you want to know.

No need to worry about it, one of the guys at the club just gave me an RD250LC for it, at least the LC is something I am familiar with.

POPEY, YOUVE GIVEN AWAY A RARE FIND INDEED. THE 1972 R5s ARE AS RARE AS HENS TEETH AND WHEN YOU DO FIND THEM, THEYRE WORTH A FORTUNE. AN LC250 ON THE OTHERHAND IS COMMON AND CHEAP. NO WONDER THE GUY IN YOUR CLUB WANTED TO SWAP IT WITH YOU. ASK ADRIAN WRIGHT OR ROBERT DAY WHAT THEYRE WORTH. THEYRE AN AWESOME BASE FOR A RACE BIKE. THEY CAN BE MADE TO GO LIKE HELL. I KNOW, BECAUSE I USED TO RACE THE 250 VERSION FOR 10 YEARS (THE DS7) AND ALL THE TZ AND TR/TD GRAND PRIX BIKE PARTS WILL SWAP WITH THE R5/DS7. YOU SHOULDNT HAVE GOT RID OF IT IN MY OPPINION. THE R5 WOULD HAVE BEEN AN EASIER THING TO WORK ON THAN THE RDLC,BEING AIR COOLED, BUT IS ALL THE SAME OTHER THAN THAT. AH WELL. THE DEALS DONE NOW. ENJOY THE LC !!!
WHITEY.

couldn't in my wildest dreams afford to do anything useful with the R5.

The LC will be held til a later date to make a rolling test bed/trackday special with one of the Honda engines, probably a 360 with KZ440 pistons.

Mick, my little bit on the dark side is the KH100 bucket (coming along nicely) but otherwise its cams and valves for me.
