Hello guys I dont know if my question is in the right section of the forum. You can move this to the proper location if need be :)
I recently bought a 1973 Honda CB350, atleast I think its a 1973. The reason I say this is because I got it from an Army Auction hence I basically was provided with a Letter of Authority from the Army (with the correct chasis and engine number ofcourse) making the bike road legal. A friend of mine who knows a thing or two about bikes, insists that it is a 1971-2 model ; the bike has 2 cylinders, not 4...but the papers say that it has 1 cylinder, so we are a bit confused there as well. This is what the papers say : Chasis # 4115241 Engine # 4169644 Honda CD350 Year of manufacture : 1973 # of Cylinder : 1
Now the problem is that I have taken this bike to a number of mechanics in my area and they tinker with the points (left & right), make it sputter back to life, hand me a bill and off i go. It will run fine for a few kilometers and then one of the points would die out i.e. it will start missing (the dreaded sound which all classic bike owners are aware of ) Might I add that other than that, the bike is in perfect condition (even the light inside the meter works!) So my question is this, how do I get a CDI for my bike? and where? I am in Pakistan btw so there are no local classic bikes dealers here Im afraid. Ordering it online and having it delivered is not a problem but I need to know exactly what to buy and where to order it from. And thats why I have come asking for your advice and help. Its summer time and I am really missing out on long evening time rides, as I am sure a lot of you can relate to :) Thanks

Hi Nitro,
Sounds like you need to change the condensers - forget the mechanics, get a repair manual if you can find one where you are! You can use just about any 12V car condensers if they fit in, or get the honda ones if you can find them.
If this does not work and you still want an electronic iggie, try some googling! There are not many places producing ignitions for the CB350 Twin, but boretech in the states can supply one (a bit expensive, but that depends on what is expensive to you!). See the link below.

You can confirm what year/model your bike is by checking the engine/frame numbers against the info on the following site:

Well we did manage to figure out that I have a CB350K4 produced from early 1972 to 1973. But bore-tech.com is offering an electronic ignition system (which i presume is the same as a CDI) for 375$!!! ill try and look around on other sites but thanks for the help Ben :) i really appreciate it, now i am pointed in the right direction, i have started googling but is there not a supplier like that in the uk or australia? |

Unfortunately there is no company in Aus (that I know of) producing electronic iggies for the K series twins. There was a company called Newtronic in the UK producing them, but I think they have folded. When you can find them they are all expensive items i'm afraid!
If you are just riding on the road then the points are generally fine if you set them up right - and all parts are still available new from Honda, or David Silver speares in the UK.
Best of Luck.

Is there a difference between a CDI unit and an Electronic Ignition System? |

There are a few different kinds of electronic ignitions and CDI is one of them. |

Hi Nitro, it may be worth trying Boyer Bransden Ignitions You must be logged in to see this link. and D&M Engineering for PVL ignition davidmike_eng@yahoo.co.uk but, there is no reason why your existing system can't be made to work properly, especially if not going to be raced. Do you have a Honda network there? Do you have the necessary skill to do it yourself? It sounds like something is worn and not functioning properly. Have you been able to isolate the problem? Are your points opening? Don't give up! Cheers, John |

Hi Nitro,
Nice try, but as I mentioned before, Newtronic are no longer in business. See the following link.

Seriously, I have looked, the only systems available out there for the 350K4 are the expensive race systems, (very good for racing but not for road) or the home made systems (based on whatever components you can get your hands on). Much better solution is to sit down and really figure out what is wrong with your current points system. They really do work very well when set up - don't forget they have been running on them for many years!
Keep googling.
Cheers. |

You could do a search in You must be logged in to see this link.
There is quite a few posts about it, but it looks like NEWTRONIC ignitions are not longer available on some of the posts I just did. |

Hopefully Shayn in Tassie can sort you out. I tried a while ago and he could not get one for my 350 due to no stock being available from Newtronics in the UK; but worth another try!

Good news. Should just be a matter of removing the points plate/assembly, unlugging it and removing the points cam from the end of the cam shaft. Then putting the new stuff in its place, then set the timing and you are away! Hopefully you got some instructions as well. Good luck.

well after a million years i am back :) the problem was i just couldnt find anyone willing to install the kit for me no one was qualified honestly then i found this heavy bike mechanic who knew enough about the new pulse systems etc to agree to look at it well it took him a while but the kit is working perfectly now the revs are thru the roof as predicted and its idling at 500 rpm which shocked the mechanic as he had never seen that with this sort of bike 1 of my carbs leaks fuel(not too much..a drop or two once an hour) and we have been trying to sort that out but for now..id thought id say thanku to all u guys for your help and i hope you can now point me in the right direction about getting proper original carbs :) heres the kit working btw You must be logged in to see this link. cheers i posted this link on one of pakistan's local biker forums and quite a number of bikers want to for this kit now lol |
