My passenger Sir Phil Treacey suggested we should create a special award along the lines of the Phil Irving trophy for solos.
Do you agree?

What would it be called?
Would we name it after a person, something nebulous, a machine or what?

I suggest the following points structure;

Points for a place down to the end of the field for a class place.

Extra points if you are in front of somebody from a more modern class.

Points for improving your lap times over the weekend.

Additional points for having a great vertical pole routine and lending me clutch plates or other items as needed.
The purpose would be to celebrate the great efforts of either somebody who is consistantly getting better on the day or has a great run.
By playing with the improvement section we could get a great award.
Does anybody know how the Phil Irving Trophy is established, it may have some good ideas?

Urquart award because Linsday has done alot with outfits since about 1958, has fought MA over rules, built many sidecars and still has success.
Win 25pts
2nd 23
3 rd 21

pass an outfit from a higher class 20 for each machine,
Improve lap times by 10% 25 points
9% 23
8% 21
7% 19 etc.

So somebody who has improved alot may top a consistant winner.

Prize prize nice perpetual trophy with copy say silver cup.

You could name it after Bob Mitchell, still the highest placed Australian in the World Sidecar Championship.

Bob Mitchell raced in Australia in the 50s then went to Europe to contest the Grand Prix Championships, finishing forth in 1956.

The man acknowledged as Australia’s greatest-ever Sidecar racer, Bob Mitchell, passed away on the Gold Coast on 13th March 2007, aged 77.

Originally from Melbourne, Mitchell was the first and only Australian to score a rostrum finish in a Sidecar Grand Prix – at the Dutch Grand Prix of 1955.

With his school chum Max George in the chair, Mitchell rode an underpowered Manx Norton against the might of the BMW teams, and with Englishman Eric Bliss as passenger, finished fourth in the 1956 World Championships.

Riding a 600cc Norton owned by his father, and the 1000cc Vincent owned by Frank Sinclair, Mitchell and passenger Jim Hocking were virtually unbeatable on the local scene from 1951-53.

With financial assistance from Hartwell MCC, Mitchell sailed for England in 1954 and purchased a new Manx Norton, racing on the Continent virtually every weekend and working as a garage mechanic between meetings.

His 1956 season included fourth place at the Isle of Man TT, but without a BMW contract, Bob considered he would be wasting his time on the old Norton, and sailed for home.

He took up where he had left off, winning 21 races straight, including two Australian TTs and a double victory at Bathurst at Easter 1957.

With little competition on the home scene, Mitchell retired at the end of 1957, returning briefly in 1960 for a couple of outings.

After owning Datsun (Nissan) and Toyota car dealerships in Victoria, Bob, his wife Jean and their three children moved to the Gold Coast in the early 1970s, where he was involved in tourism projects.
