I've recently become involved with promoting an Historic Car (prtt prtt) Meeting, and one of the promotion ideas might interest the guys in historic motorcycle racing.
The event is an Historic GP Racing Cars Demo. We've found about eight GP cars still remaining in Vic. and intend running them in a demo halfway through the meeting:
Type 37C Bugatti.
Ex Stan Jones J2 Allard
Ex Stan Jones Maybach
Supercharged Lago Talbot
Ferrari 246 Dino F2
The Alboretto Ferrari F1
Mercedes W 196 R
Brabham F1
Ex Frank Matich F5000 M10B McLaren
I wonder where all the genuine racers are in the motorcycle world e.g. the Green Meanies, the bikes from the Swann Series, Rob Phillis's superbikes, The Jesser Triumph, The Henderson Matchless, Arthur Pimm's Vincent, Eric Debenham's Vincent, AJ's NSR500 Honda - all the stuff with real history?
The car demo will consist of a staged start behind a pace car - we could use a travelling marshall. It's not a race but one of the Ferraris has John Bowe in it! The McLaren is being driven by Max Warwick - his wife won't let him race!
It'd be real nice to see the same sort of demo done with motorcycles.

As I mentioned before, I can remember some beautiful sidecars raced a few years ago - the Jim/Jack Craig Vincent, Alex Corner's Vincent, the Clarex Harley, Ken Horner's Vincent, the Orrie Salter BMW, The Denny McCormick 4 cyl Kawasaki, the Dennis Skinner Laverda, and your own Stan Bayliss Honda. They all have real history associated with them. They were the 'good stuff' back then, but most of them seem to have disappeared. A Championship Winning Sidecar Demo could bring a few of them out, and at least we'd know where they are.
I'm no lover of sidecars but I'd turn up to see a demo with the bikes mentioned. Most of them wouldn't be competitive against the big Hondas these days, but a demo could keep them going.
Wonder who's got the Konig, I know who's got Lindsay's BMW, but it's a big dollar?

Laurie Fox 600cc Norton outfit is still in Mt gambier and comes out at the old farts meeting with Laurie aboard.

I wonder if Alec Campbells outfits are still there somewhere

There must be lots of exotic solos left, dont forget the specials such as the Les Diener Eldee, Hunter specials etc
, my ex Arthur Wheeler KTT is still in Melbourne

Bruce, I think it's important if/when running such a demo, to have an identifiable group of machine. In the car thing, I'm using 'Historic GP Racing Cars'. For the sidecars, I suggested 'Championship Winning Sidecars'.
For solos it could be useful to identify a group as 'GP and Production Racers', or even 'Motorcycles of the Champions'.
I believe it's visually easy to identify a GP racing car, it mightn't be so easy with bikes.
Is your ex Arthur Wheeler bike an exTT competitor ?
Hope to see 'group demos' a feature of all historic meetings some day.
P.S. I also wondered about Alex Campbell's sidecars. The've probably been cannibalised.
Best Regards,
Alan Cotterell

Yes Alan
Arthur rode my ex KTT in both the Manx and the TT
There is a photo of Arthur which states "on his pre war KTT" As I had the original log book with purchase date the dates stated in the photo dont add up. It is no doubt my machine
It is now owned by Frank Trento at Eurobrit Motorcycles Greensborough.
Frank has stated he intends to use it for the purpose for which it was desined.
Len Tinker in Portland still had his genuine MV's a few years ago
Bruce Rehn's TT AJS (1930) was still in Adelaide recently.
Eric Hinton still has a stable.
There would be a lot of genuine exotica in the country if we put our thinking caps on.
A works 500 KTT known a "the monster" is I think in Bathurst (circa 1934)
It could be a great parade regards Bruce P

Bruce, The beauty of a demo, is the guys know they don't have to 'race'. Even so a few of them will still 'have a go'. If we could get some of the bikes you mentioned to a meeting - could really generate a bit of interest.
Incidently - is the MV you mentioned the double knocker 125 I saw at Mac park in the late sixties?

Once again a long reply lost due to some silly mistake.
It happens to me a lot. sometimes I dont have time to repeat

Yes Alan
I think the MV you saw would be Len Tinker's He appeared at Winton in the 80's and rode it very gently but it sounded great. I did not know Len as I did not renew my interest til the early 80's , gave up in the 50's for business reasons as motorcyclists were "not nice people" in that era.
The last time I saw Eric HInton at Eastern Creek he told me he still has Harry (senior) Norton on which he humiliated Fergus Anderson in 1949 who was mounted on the latest v twin moto guzzi which held the lap record in the TT the year before with Tenni aboard. The Norton was a works model about 1934.
I was at Woodside S A when Harry had time to get off the bike before Fergus came in , Fergus took Harry with an arm over the shoulder and looking at the Norton shook his head in disbelief.
I was only a young bloke but can remember if yesterday/.
