| It was a podcast on the ABCTV. I'll try to find the link again and post it here. I had to laugh when I found out that the guy on the ground with Peggy in that photo was Arthur Roberts. I knew him fairly well - bloody good guy. I never realised he had crashed Peggy. |

| If I'd had a better bike I might have beaten her, but she always finished ahead of me. Great to see her getting recognition, she certainly showed us the way around Calder. |

| The reason I found it was I was looking for the one which was on air two days ago in which Mick Doohan was interviewed. If I can get the sound track, there are enough photos of him on the web to make a video. It's about getting our history up on Youtube. |

| I don't think it is Mick Ralph, I knew him quite well, and I think he was taller and skinnier, and his face was different. It was the right period for Mick to be involved with Peggy. The photo looks like it was taken at a meeting where the guy in question was her co-rider in a production race. Might have been the six hour but it looks like she had finished well up. Also Mick worked at Melbourne Suzuki, and was a mate of John Megalos who was in FURT/ MUMCC, so it could be him |

| I think you are correct about the guy with the microphone being Wes Brown, but that's a bit strange. I can't think why he would be in that situation. The guy to his left with the white cap is Bill Dobson. Might have been at Calder, but the background doesn't look right . |

To Conker and others - this is the real Peggy Hyde - and that pic (with hand on shoulder) is NOT me!! I don't know who it is.
Also, "info" that Lindsay Love taught me to race is entirely incorrect. He worked on converting my Suzuki T20 from road to race, and was occasional pit crew. No-one taught me (or anyone?) to race. Lindsay died a few years ago, also his wife Ruth, who was secretary of Hartwell Club. I'm in touch with some of their children. Other pit crew were my (now deceased) husband Julian, also Bob Forstmann who did a terrific job of replacing the TR2B crankshaft (I always had spares ready to go) between races at Bathurst. All on a tarp in the open.
I have many pics and newsclips if anyone is interested. Also an audio tape of the last meeting at Bathurst before the noise regulations came in. Also my leathers, Bell helmet, and my last pair of racing boots. Would love to hear from anyone from those days. Specially a man called Alan who helped me at Oran Park when I hit the concrete wall, took my boot off, straightened it (metal last) and put it back on again to contain the swelling, so I could race that night under lights.
These days I live on a yacht - anyone riding though Townsville (it's as far from Brisbane as is Melbourne), please call in! mobile 0427 724 052.
And for the record - my Mach III (unlike King's) was stock standard and 10,000 miles old by the time of the first 6-hour race, with a crack in the crankcase casting where a mounting bracket had stressed it - the engine "singing" the whole way - and I came in 4th in class, one lap behind Ken Blake. I lost 20 laps with a (much squashed) broken muffler, Ken's handlebars broke and I loaned him a large screwdriver to lash across them so he could finish (but his crew did not help when my muffler fell off). Ken and I were among the few who did not crash during that event. Many who finished had crashed at least once.
I have correspondence with organising Clubs over some race track incidents if anyone is interested.

It was great to hear from Alan after - how many years - 35?
I well remember Winton - my first race meeting - my husband Julian and I shared the one set of leathers - an English (RAF) flying suit complete with lambswool lining, much too big for me. We were both riding D-grade. No-one realised I was a woman; Hartwell Club used initials in the program instead of first names and no-one was the wiser.

Back in those days I always rode an old bike - too lousy to buy something worthwhile, and I now regret that. There were some really good goers in Allpowers C grade, and I can remember when Peggy came along and blitzed the lot of us. It was quite hilarious. Even funnier when she aced off Blakey. I never saw Ken on anything but a top bike. The Jesser Triumph was really schmick. Jack Walters's TZs were good. Angel's H1 Kawasaki wouldn't have been slow. It wouldn't be too often that anyone would get the opportunity to have a go at him on an equal footing. - Well done !
I look at road racing these days with dismay. The opportunities for real fun just don't seem to be there, and I'm so sorry I didn't make the most of those opportunities back then. We didn't appreciate what we had. I believe it's gone backwards since 1985. That was high tide ! |

CORRECTION - Ruth Love (former Hartwell Club Secretary) is alive and well at 82 and phoned to me tell me she is NOT dead!!
Curiosity from Townsville: the bottom of Breakwater Marina, before the sea was let in, was used as a dirt race track. So my yacht has been moored over the old race track for much of the last 20 years.

| I was no longer in Hartwell club when the Loves were there. I got disgusted when the Laverton Oz TT meeting was held with so much bad publicity, and left. But as it turned out the racing I saw there was the best I watched in my whole lifetime, from the Geoff Duke Meeting at Fisherman's Bend to the present day. And I am forever grateful to Murray Nankervis and Wes Brown for their efforts in running it. I know Jim Scaysbrook canned the meeting in one issue of his Old Bike magazine, but he wasn't involved, and didn't take the risk. It's just a pity that we haven't had more smart alecks prepared to have a go at running big race meetings. I think the snoozers that are around these days are all chicken sh1t. |
