In the olden days when we had 4 sidecars attending the Vic Historic Titles, I put forward a plan as part of an overall plan to promote any sidecar class to include F2 outfits within the Post Classic races. Ron Trounson needs to be acknowledged for his efforts in getting the F2 outfits to the track.
Today at the completion of the meeting at Broadford I was approached with some comments that the F2 outfits should not run with the Historics. The major reason given was that they play for sheep stations. I can say that earlier the Cleark of Course had suggested we consider starting the faster [ F2 ] outfits a row ahead of the rest of the machines. I would appreciate frank and open discussion with input about specfic details so I can present a report of the situation.
If I get no feedback I will not be able to do anything. If you feel you need to remain anonymous, please change that feeling we need openess to get better results.

I'm only a newcomer to this great motorsport, and this weekend was the first time I've ever run with the F2's. I have to say they are bloody frightening. The sheep stations comment is spot-on for mine; it's a different class, a different mindset,a different budget and committment level and therefore maybe a feeling that everyone not of the same ilk should get the hell out of the way. I genuinely believe they shouldn't run with us. |

I have to agree with Matt "two fingers" Morgan, the F2's frightened the bejeezus out of us as well. We had our first true taste of racing at the historics, and the excitement was only tempered by having to worry about the F2's coming up very fast behind us. In fairness, they are a great bunch of gentlemen, and would benefit from having their own races, this would make for more thrilling racing in my opinion. Wasn't the same thing done to create the V8 Supercar series? Cheers, Buck & Peen (the Pink Pig, #20) |

Further to the idea from the Starters, the BEARS run a split grid to sepaarte the faster F1 machines from the others. It is done only for the machines that have lap times that show they deserve to be at the front group. Another issue is some outfits continuing to race hard after the chequered flag and screaming past some slower outfits. Now I have not seen that taking place and I seek additional feedback as to whether it is an issue or not.
Please dont publish any names here.
I must remind everybody that any real concerns can be addressed to the Clerk of Course at the track during racing and at other times I am comfortable about accepting information for consideration at Committee level if required. |

I can understand the concern re the faster bikes but with a little common sense all can be accomadated. We run F1, F2, P5s and P4s together without to much of a problem, admittedly Wanneroo is a wide and flowing track so is easy to overtake and to give others room but as long as people follow the golden rules of holding their line and the overtaker finding a safe way around the slower bikes then all should be ok. Having said that it is a bit scary having a rocket overtake a slug, I know I have physically jumped when an F1 has gone by when I wasnt expecting it. Split grids do help as the worst lap is usually the first till the order gets sorted. Just my take on an old problem that wont go away until the grids are full with Historics.

Great w/end from all. I still believe we should race with the f2's They slowed us down and we couldn't get passed them, It would of be a boring race's without!!!!!and for the paying public.
in the future we could start how we finisheach race. We were faced with the same problem when we started 18 months ago but we had long bikes to deal with aswel!!!!!

Just on this, I note the classics do not run the same events as us..... I will say this and peen is right, he and I got some sensational advice from one of the guys on an F2, and I as a passenger I used it. I did make comment at the time that seeing an F2 coming onto you is very scary particularily in the crash corner area at Broadford, it scared the **** out of me on more than one occassion especially when you see the driver busting his chops to avoid you..... and obviously I see them more than the driver, I worked out with peen that when one was coming on, the tap on the leg became a thump to let him know. But then we are very new, it would be interesting to hear from the more experinced P4 people. F2s,They are quick and realistically should be in a position to use their speed on a track, they are incredible to watch, even when viewing them as a passenger. I guess as Matt "two fingers" Morgan says, they are a very different class in every aspect. But great people. |

Howdy All. I'm usually a silent observer of the Forum, but after a pre-race prediction came true on turn 1 of our first race on the weekend, I can't let this topic pass untouched, if not unashamedly mauled. Like many of us, I've been trackside with F2 bikes on various occasions, and no criticism of the F2 crews is intended or implied. We're all there to go racing. We all have our standards of "race face" with what ever equipment we straddle. So, let's be honest and direct. Don't sugar coat the debate with words of good intentions and perceived camaraderie of being brother competitors or fellow 'sidies'. Things are what they are on the other side of the spectator fence. From my perspective, even before the flag falls, the "red mist" halo seems thicker around any F2. It seemingly warns that you are regarded as a lesser talent on your old dinosaur outfit and despite Pit Lane niceties, you are now relegated to a nuisance or rolling chicane to be shown the appropriate level of minimum tolerance. Few of the small bore Posties haven't banged fairings with overtaking F2's, swapped paint, absolutely crapped themselves with ballistic F2 overtaking antics, or ridden 'cross country' to recover from snatched race lines...etc. Don't know the feeling or think "split grids" are the answer? Have a ride during Qualifying, or in a mistimed Handicap race, or see the result of a stalled or slow starting F2 out to catch up to his peers through a slower field. Want more...? F2's starting out of Pit Lane, or rejoining at the tail of the field after an "off" to chase the leaders. The scenario list goes on... The sanctity of a "split Grid"? Forget it... I haven't even touched on apparent and overt spectator confusion as to what these moderns are doing at an Historic race meeting...?? In conclusion, would I be correct in saying that here in Vic. our Historic sidecar category is surfing the crest of a resurgence? Numbers have returned, with more on the cusp. Dare I even hint that like P3, the navana of seperate P4 or even P5 races could no longer be a pipe dream? Sorry F2 boys. My vote is cast. Thank you for your past support, but times move on. No disrespect or criticism , but this Postie-punter would like to see you tangling with your F1 big brothers, leaving us 'dinosaurs' unmolested to roam and lock horns with our own genre.

I'm with Cookie, folks. I reckon historic sidecar numbers are on the up, and we've found ourselves in the wonderful position of being able to race full fields of P3, P4 etc on their own. Can having more sidecar races in a program be a bad thing??? |

Politically it may be awkward and logistically difficult as it would mean 6 more races in a 48 race program.

I also agree with Cookey, good expression of thoughts. (Wouldn't like to review my Masters thesis would you??) Have any of the F2 duys been contacted or commented on the discussion? I, for one, would be interested to hear their opinion. Cheers, Tony (#20) |

Agree John. Given the passgae of time, I have come to an even stronger belief that the F2 brigade should race in their own category. As I mentioned earlier, the V8's created their own class due to the dangers (and marketing benefits) associated with slower smaller vehicles being in the same events. The P3's largely have their own events, and good on em. With the increase of the P4 & P5 numbers, I believe that it is time for our own specific races. Just an opinion from a newby. Cheers, Peen (Tony). |
