|
Does anyone remember anything of the Australian TTs held in Little River, Victoria in the early 1950s. Competitors included Quincey and Pratt.
I would appreciate any information or photographs to add to the Little River Historical Society collection.

I travelled with Laurie Fox OAM a lot in the late 40's and early 50's (lived in Mt Gambier at the time) I was not at that meeting but I think Laurie rode his Norton outfit.

 I remember seeing Frank Spiller running down the wire fince line on his triumph  Gee i was a little kid then, wonder if Frank is still around last heard from frank in 1969? Franks son did have a motorcycle shop and raced moderns  |

In reply to the query regarding the "Australian TT" at Little River.
This meeting was held on Friday December 26 & Saturday December 27 1952, on the roads around and through the township of Little River. The meeting was promoted by the Harley Club of Victoria.
The circuit was 4 miles to a lap, and the main races ran 12 laps (48 miles). The main straight was the Melbourne to Geelong road.
The 125cc race was won by Maurie Quincey on a BSA Bantam, from Keith Hambrook BSA Bantam, and Ray Owen riding a CZ.
The 250cc race was won by Sid Willis of NSW, riding a Velocette. He was followed by Alan Boyle (Velocette) and Ray Owen (Triumph).
The Junior Sidecar TT (machines up to 750cc)was won by Bob Mitchell on a Norton, from Laurie Fox (Norton) and Jack Lodge (Norton).Bernie Mack had led for most of the race, but his Norton dropped a valve near the finish.
The 350cc race was won by Alan Boyle (Velocette), from George Scott of WA (AJS) and Maurie Quincey (Norton).
The Senior TT (500cc) was won by Maurie Quincey riding a Norton, from W (Bill)Anderson of Qld.(Norton),with Laurie Boulter of SA third (Norton).
The Senior Sidecar TT (machines up to 1200cc) was won by Frank Sinclair (Vincent) from Laurie Fox (Norton)and Jack Lodge (Norton) third.Frank Pratt competed in this event, and the Junior Sidecar race on BMW machines, but was not placed.
The final event on the second day was the "Australian Unlimited TT" for solo machines up to 1000cc. This was run over 48 miles. The winner was Maurie Quincey on his Norton, from Jack Ehret of NSW riding a Vincent, and George Scott (WA) third.
The meeting was well promoted with an informative program, and the meeting was officially opened by the local MHR, Hubert Opperman (a former cycling champion) on the Friday afternoon.
I am uncertain how many race meeting were run at Little River, but Harley Club did run the 1954 Victorian TT meeting on Monday 14th June 1954, and the 1955 Victorian TT was run there in March 1955.
Does anybody else have any information, photos or reminisinces of race meetings at this venue?
I have attached a map of the circuit, plus a photograph of the Junior Sidecar race.
Machine # 69, a Norton ES2, is being ridden by George Murphy. #47 is Keith Johnson on a Norton. #6,another Norton, I am unable to identify, and the obscured machine could be Wes Brown and Jack Casey on a BSA.

At the recent Harley Club 80th Dinner at Broadford the club had a huge range of Road Racing photographs, event posters and heaps of motomobilia. In fact the display took up one half of one shed. We are gathering up a lot of material for Broadford display use and will be using a lot of their material.
I will call their sports secretary tonight. |

Thank you sincerely to all those who responded to my mail regarding the Australian TT at Little River.
My apologies for not returning sooner - unfortunately small children are the natural enemy of the historical researcher.
I am now starting to follow through the leads you provided and hope to be able to comprise an account of this event for inclusion in the Historical Collection of the Society. As few locals are aware of the existence of this event, I believe it will prove an interesting addition to our collection and our historical displays.
