Courtesy of PCRA website - an interesting and useful site on helmets - the top dollar lids don't necessarily offer top protection!

Fascinating.
Just shows to go that you don't always get what you pay for.
So many expensive ones with a poor rating.

Why was this topic started? Doesn't the MOMS call up an Australian Standard on helmets?

Why was this topic started. Let me see...oh yes, helmets, being one of the more critical bits of safety kit we wear, means the more informed we are about them the better. People assume the better brand and price the better the safety ability of the helmet but that is not always the case. Surely it is of more use than not to have more awareness of what one is putting one's brain inside?? My only concern is the methodology used to test them by this particular organisation - other entities and methods may yield slightly different results - but nothing is going to be definitively definitive, if you like, and in the absence of anything else, I'd consider this website to be neutral, useful and thorough.

I suspect that the AS 1698 would be a fairly basic standard and that although all helmets must meet this standard some would barely meet it and others would comfortably exceed it.
It would be interesting to know how this company conducts the tests and what they use as a basis of judgement.

If either of you are really serious about safety, there's nothing stopping you from getting yourselves onto a Standards Australia committee, and doing something really constructive?
