I wonder how we'd go, if we approached MA and suggested Supermono be extended to include three sub-classes - Junior, Senior and Unlimited. We could end up with a 'support class' for historic race meetings. A while ago I was prattling on about the desirability of racing 500cc four stroke singles. If Supermono was extended to include classes for 350s and 500s as well as unlimited, the historic guys would get another opportunity to race competitively. Supermonos have until now been mostly 600s and 700s in old TZ frames, most of them were so expensive to keep running, they are now lying DED in garages around everywhere. If we got hold of them and stuffed 500cc singles into them, we'd have a cheap beginners class, and if a good manx couldn't beat them, I don't know what else would. The three Sub -classes could run together with separate trophies. JUST A THOUGHT !

350cc would keep a few P3's in the hunt, 250cc would supply more engines . As long as it was kept at pre 1980 (all components) it could get a few guys really keen as a second class to run in.

I don't know why the class would have to be pre 80. If the later supermonos were converted back to 500cc, it probably wouldn't matter much if they had deltabox frames, four spot calipers, and slicks. The early (62) manx was developed almost to the limit, and the way they were, would be hard to beat even with all the modern equipment. You don't need slicks with a 50 hp motor, drum brakes would be a slight disadvantage, but the historic racers pre 72 are allowed to run alcohol, where a modern supermono wouldn't be allowed to. It would be interesting to see what the guys would come up with in the way of forgotten era 350 singles. XL350 Hondas? Wonder if they'd beat a 7R AJS?

book me in for a WR450 Yamaha engine in a RS125 rolling chassis please, about 44 HP in a 90kg package would see some fun, this years motor pulls so well they only put 4 gears in the box. Just priced it up at about 16 grand so it's not exactly budget racing. |
