I was at the Vic Sports Annual Awards last night, Alisa Camplin, [Olympic and World Champion Aerial Skier} was awarded the Sportsperson of the Year, I was awarded the Volunteer Administrator of the Year - Motorcycling.
But I met some people from CAMS who are trying to improve the image of motorsport by promting the values, ie Teamwork, budgeting, socialisation, patience, club activity, skills learning that is possible with motorsport clubs.
I think it could be a good idea to think about aiming at 16 -17 yo's who could enterr historic racing on P5 250cc. What do others think?

Congratulations on the award John, it is well deserved, and also significant to see a volunteer motorcycling administrator recognised.

Congratulations John, The award shows you are doing something right. It's been a while since anyone reflected credit on the motorcycle fraternity, except for people like Troy Corser, Doohan and Gardner, and look what they have to do to get any sort of recognition. It's rare for people behind the scenes to be acknowledged, so I think your award is pretty special.

John I believe your idea about putting 16 to 17 year olds on P5 250 two strokes is a good one. In the olden days C grade racing was never accessible to all until the guys started riding RD Yamahas. In the early seventies everybody had one, the A Graders had watercooled TZs, but that didn't matter, we all had a good go.
I own a couple of RD250LC Yams, and they are a great bike. They're fast and handle well. To make them stop costs $100 for the extra disc. You can do a little bit to make them faster, but generally it doesn't matter how much you spend, you won't achieve much advantage (even if you fit a lot of TZ bits).
A good RD250LC costs about $1500, there's about $250 in tyres, pull off the lights and stands, and fit number plates, and you're away!
I've noticed a couple of them in P5 races, and they go quite well against the rest. I do suggest however that we start running 'up to 500cc, P4 and P5' together as a feature race.
Personally I've never liked two strokes, but if you want to learn to race, they're the way to go. Another thing RD250LCs are SAFE.

That's exactly what is missing from road racing. We lose out to Motocross and Speedway who get them young and keep them.

In Darwin the local car club has a program for 16 and 17 year old students which includes the high schools. At school they build and maintain the vehicle and then race it against other schools at a club day. The police are also involved and consider it is good training.

Sorry John. I meant to congratulate you on the award but it slipped my mind. One just has to see the effort you put in here to know it is thoroughly deserved.

Thanks.
But I too see the other disciplines grabbing the young ones. I thought if we got them to ride days , even with a coach it might get them tasting the fun. How would we start it going?

Congratulations John,

it is always nice to see volunteers rewarded for their efforts, especially if it is by outsiders, thank you for work so far and may it inspire others to follow suit.

Taking about getting the youngies into motor sport. The cops in Corowa ha a lot of trouble with the young guys dropping wheelies and speeding in the town. They brought a lot of them to Winton, and taught them how to drive. One of them started out pretty ordinary, he was stalling around. Mick Ronke checked his car (he reckoned he had a problem), and told him to start driving. At the end of the day the young guy was getting around as good as anybody.
They've been back a couple of times since, and the kids love it!
I think if I had a youngie these days, who owned a hottie, I'd pay to have the John Bowe Driving School put him into a V8, and taught to do it properly. The kid might stay alive a bit longer!
P.S. I'd give Alisa Camplin an award any time! (does the baby bonus count?)
