Just to separate a topic with lots of interest from the bigger topic of how to improve classic racing,i thought it would be good to have a reasoned debate on the matter. personnally I dont agree with it but others do. Lets debate the issue on its own. Can we pass the hat around so Snoozer can get to see Ross Martin in a race?9 refer earlier topic]

I've seen Ross Martin race. Back in about 1958 he passengered Wes Brown on his outfiy No4 at Darley, as a Kid, and I believe they may have won except the crankshaft popped out of the side of the engine. Ross was also quite a good speedway sidecar rider until involved in a very bad accident. So like him or hate him, he does actually have a background in historic racing, and I believe, does have genuine concerns about it, which should be heard. |
Is your machine authentic or merely eligible? |

For what its worth Ross and myself were at the Island Classic this year as observers regarding eligibilty and believe me we could have and maybe should have reported probably ten or more machines to the relevant authorities if we had been so inclined. As it was only one machine was not allowed to run and he turned up without a Log Book. There were several phone calls made in an attempt to resolve this issue but at such a late stage it couldnt be achieved. I found Ross quite ok to work with at the time and believe that he does, obviously in his own way, care about Historic racing. I am sure given the right circumstances he could be seen meandering around the track again at some stage. If you want to arrange it I will give him a run around on my sidecar in the lunch break, thats if it is still going by then.

i think if u did offer some money or even subsidised entries or help with accomidation and travel allowences, perhaps more racers may come from interstate. how about stagering the meetings a bit better? with 3 major races in victoria in just 4 months, its a bit expensive just for the travel costs without even thinking about the entry fees. you victorians should start to think about the island classic as your major meeting of the year and try and arrange to keep other national meetings atleast 3 or more months away from then. but hey, offer to pay start money and see what happens? |
There are those who do, those who used to do and those who never did.. why is this 3rd group always trying to convince everyone they know best? |

John I have mentioned before that I personally do not believe that small subsidies are the way to achieve greater numbers. Certainly money is an issue and the way fuel prices are going it will become a bigger one, back when fuel was reasonable we were paying something like $1.25 a litre out on the Nullabor so god knows what it is now. I believe that enjoyment is the biggest issue and value for the money spent comes a very close second. To add to that stability with the rules ie not to many changes and consistent enforcement and interpretation of the same. If money is to be paid care must be shown not to alienate the bread and butter rider who will never be at the front without these people racing cannot take place . The NT guys used to have free entry for interstate competitors at the Territory Challenge but I dont think it really affected numbers as when you consider the cost of transport, accomodation car hire etc the entry fee which was reasonable anyway paled into insignificance. We tried the same approach over here a few years back for our State Championships but apart from Bob Blythe, Ken Lucas and some of the NT brigade it had little effect. What did help us though was promotion, we have had Phil Read and Jim Redman out as guests of honour and with a bit of work from our members promoting these ex Champions they had a small effect on fields and a greater effect on the paying public through the gate. More ramblings from the WA pom, hope it helps a little.
