With my earlier topic about how to help Riders promote, Ben was the only response. So now I want to be provocative. PERSONAL OPINION COMING UP. I reckon racers owe it to themselves and those they race against to take action to get spectators to meetings it would help the promoting club committees, spread the effort and help to keep racing fees down, if we get paying spectators. It could be one way for riders to help, what do people think?

john, i think you have a good point everyone should be be trying to promote the sport.there are several points i'd like to make, to begin with we should have some sort of rule about the presentation of a historic motorcycle,it can enforced when each bike is presented for morning inspection.firstly the bikes must be clean!(it's not difficult to wash a bike and run a rag around the rims)but it seems only a few racers take enough pride in their machines to do this.secondly all bikes must be cosmeticly in good condition with no cracked or broken bodywork and a decent paint job. finaly all bikes must have a similar silhouette to original motorcycle being depicted.(i think P5 needs some sort of rule like that inpaticular).....when i invite people to a race meeting the most common comments i recieve are "look how dirty that thing is" "that one looks like its falling apart........why is it allowed to race like that" or for P5"what the hell is that!"(i tell them what sort of bike it is)then they say "it dosen't look any thing like it!" basicly if the bikes are presented looking dirty and crappy who is going to pay money to see them race!you only have to turn a couple of racers with dirty bikes and every one will get the message!------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------i don't belive draging friends to race tracks is the best way to promote the sport, instead of taking the people to the bikes why not take the bikes to the people! why not suggest to each club to think of an upcomming event in their local area and set up a stand to promote the club and historic racing.it could be a motorcycle swap meet, a show and shine , a hotrod show, even a round of the ARRC it would not matter as long as the people going to the event had some sort if intrest in motor sport. you only need 1 or 2 bikes from each period the riders would be able to explain their bikes and the class they race in to people. you would be able to advertise upcomming race meetings and maby even sign up a few new members.a bored father draging the family around an oval now has excited children on his side when he suggests that the family goes to a historic race meeting!......he may have also seen quite a cheap way of getting back the bike his wife forced him to sell years ago.........................................................................................................................................................any way thats the way i think it should be done, make the people want to go to the races .......but we should all be trying to present our bikes with pride to them, because they wont come back twice if they have payed to see pieces of crap the first time! |

The HMRAV has stands at Seymour, Epping and the city with minin shows. We finish up with a couple of committee member bikes only because nobody else will partake. TOO BUSY Lets take on board the points Haf has made, but I am interested to know why riders dont want to actively promote their own sport? |

I will display my bike at the Armadale Hotel next year for the upcoming Titles in March with any promo material that is available. The Island Classic event must also be targeted for promotional material to all the spectators attending.
Is it possible to place an Advert with a photo, logo, entry details etc in the program @ the Island Classic? Free listings in : Trading post Herald The Age Bike mags etc....are a requirement that can include photos , giveaways and a short blurb having positive results perhaps.
Can a calendar of Classic race meetings be included with club details etc in each program?
Perhaps have ticket "specials" available to advance purchases.
Commentators should heavily promote upcoming events over the P.A.
Ivor Evans(current racer) has talked about being happy to act as a publicist(has much experience in this field) for classic events, collating results and some editorial to be distributed to newspapers, mags, etc.etc.etc. for a fee. Such an offer should certainly be investigated and acted upon.
