Somebody has suggested that we look at Classic BEARS as a area we could draw bikes sitting in the shed out with. It would go for all periods upto 1980 and perhaps incorporate the old pushrod class we tried and got a few turning up for. Now I know that some people say they can race in the existing structure, but they aren't so why not try something. What do people think?

John, We tried BEARS but it didnt work for us but again WA is a small state which could account for that. We do however run Thunderbikes along with C&D Grade Moderns as a support class at our race days which helps us with entries. In case you arent aware Thunderbikes are 4 strokes of 1,2 or 3 cylinders and Jap bikes can enter so we get a mix of Pommie, European and Jap bikes and for a while we did have a Harley chugging around. The good thing about the class is that anyone with a historic 4 stroke that can achieve a reasonable lap time can join in and get an extra ride if they feel like it. I wait with eager anticipation the comments about allowing Modern bikes at a Historic race meeting. It works for us and managed properly it can work for you. The biggest problem we have with the C%D Grade guys is when they get upgraded they still want to ride with us but we do stand firm on this and will not under any circumstances allow A or B Grade to enter.

This B\Classic BEARS is different . I am still waiting on more details, but they are limited to 1980. As for extra modern bikes at Historic meetings, there is no support here. I can get the BEARS at the Vic titles but thats because the Titlesare not well supported by the Historics. But I can say the inclusion of the BEARS has come back to bite. Some people are trying to argue the dreaded precident.... but you have the BEARS why not us. It is a sloppy argument but some people try it. We tried Dirt bike up to 1980 but when they heard the entry fees, $120 against $35 and leathers instead of Tee shirts they were not happy. But lets stick to Classic BEARS I will get more details of the concept. |

The Heritage Bears was run at the Barry Sheen Memorial Meeting at Eastern Creek a few weeks ago. Everyone I spoke too enjoyed the racing of the class. There were combined clasess of 500cc Clubman & Unlimited Classic & BEARS F4 & F5. This meant that the grids were overflowing, with up to 50 bikes.. At first the categories were seperated on the grid, but after the first race Officials decided to grid everyone on there times. This worked very well. Very good racing I thought. |

What else does Bob do better that draws the crowds and competitors that we can learn about? We get howls of derision, but no good ideas, if we do anything different from when petrol cost 12cents a litre |

John,
I think I can spek for everyone who attends Bobs race meetings that everyone thoroughly enjoys the format of the races he has. Maybe you guys can look at his format and adopt some of it into your events. I for one think the up to 68 races are great. This allows you to race against guys that you would not normally ride against. The same applies when Classic BEARS is run with F4 and F5. It actually very interesting to see Classics on the second row of the grid in this class. Bob also has the modern bears there racing as well, some people don't like this, but seriously as a racer you don't even notice that they are there. You are too busy working on bikes etc.. He also had the SuperKarts on the program. This is a crucila part of being able to run a Successful race meeting. I think we all need to look at what is being done at other race meetings and try it out at our meetings. Some will be good, some may not be. My two cents worth. |

Kavo I am not suggesting we will be running all Formulea BEARS Australia entries at the Southern Classic or Historic Winton. We are just our looking to see if a race involving only Pommy, Yanky or Wog bikes, no Jap and we could call it Classic BEARS just to get the message across. Is it any clearer? Any way how can we make it work, I dont need doomsady comments there are plenty of them about. |

John, Not trying to give doomesday comments, just trying to pass on some information. I think the Classic Bears is worth a go. Like everything though, it needs to be promoted to give people enough time to get organised. I know of a few guys from QLD who actually follow (race) the Heritage BEARS events around the country. |
