Hi,
My name is Catherine and I'm currently looking for people to participate in my research project. This project is part of my Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Psychology degree at Deakin University.
The project follows up a study conducted in 2008, which found that people high in psychological need for control (people who like a lot of control over their lives - if you like, ‘control freaks’!) were generally safer riders. However, we unexpectedly also found that these riders reported more performance of stunts (wheelies and wheel spins).
This study therefore aims to further explore the relationship between safety and stunting. Are those high in need for control seeking to test the limits of themselves and their bikes? Can stunting help you become a safer rider?
We are therefore looking for licenced on-road motorcycle riders, who have ridden within the last 24 months, to complete the confidential questionnaire that makes up this project.
If you're interested in participating, or just want to find out more, then please follow the link below:

What a strange idea? Does being a 'control freak' include throttle control? |

Catherine, I think you need to broaden your horizons. There are many motorcyclists who don't ride on the roads. Improving one's riding skill does not in itself make one a control freak but does make one a better rider. The alternative is painful at best and fatal at worst. Those who need to perform stunts possibly have a need to be the centre of attraction rather than a particular desire to improve their riding skills. Good luck with your research. John |

Stunts like 'wheelies and wheel spins'? How about sliding down the bitumen on your back at 160KPH? Do you have to be a 'control freak' to do that? How about a 'lack of control freak'? |

Hmmm, my, aren't we a defensive little group! What's wrong with wanting to control one's own life? I'll give it a go. Cheers, Tony. |

Tony, the term 'control freak' is often used to describe people who try to control the lives of others. There's nothing wrong with controlling your own life. In fact I recommend it! This stuff about doing wheelies because we are control freaks, is woman talk!! Let's ask Peggy Hyde for her opinion? She'd be the fastest woman ever on a Vic race circuit. We'll ask her is she still browbeating her husband! |
