The other day I was talking to M.J.Ronke about the meetings held at Sandown in the seventies. I named about 8 top line riders who used to go there - Warren Willing, Greg Hasford, Ken Blake, Greg Johnson, Laurie Barnett, Hurley Wilvert, Pat Hennen, and I can probably name about 5 more if I think about it. Mick then asked me who is the current Superbike Champion - I didn't know it was Craig Coxhell, even though he only live about 60 Km away from Benalla. Seems that not many people know who the big names are these days, and a lot of them apparently disappear overseas fairly quickly. I wonder what's happening to the sport, and who will be the heros to historic racers in 2050? Here's a question - what was Shaun Geronomi's time on the TZ250 on the big circuit at Winton - he holds the lap record!

I think the fastest time I've heard of a bike doing on the long circuit is 1min 23 secs, by Craig Mc Martin on the 999 Ducati works jigger at the V8s a couple of years back. He was 1 sec faster than the quickest car. I don't think I could do 1 min 26 on the short circuit. |
