There is every indication that the 2004 Geelong Sprints will not take place this year. So far there has been no agreement between all the parties, which includes, Geelong Council, CAMS etc

Its official...

2004 Geelong Speed Trials Cancelled
The Geelong Speed Trials Organising Committee regrets having to cancel the 2004 event and we sincerely apologise to our loyal sponsors, friends in the media, competitors and fans for any inconvenience this decision has caused.
Our decision was based on a number of issues that have plagued the event since 2002, including:
o The processes used to create the Geelong Major Events Contract - This includes our authority to stage the event. These processes do not produce a timely result. Last year we were promised an up front payment which did not eventuate. Also having to repeat the contract process on an annual basis, rather than a 3-year minimum period, has a negative influence on our ability to attract sponsorship, international competitors, spectators and the media.

o Council Support – Council officers need to adopt a more timely, facilitative and pro-active response to our needs, rather than an 11th. hour approach to the identification and resolution of critical issues.

o Infrastructure – More effective solutions need to be found to the implementation and removal of the Grand Prix type concrete barricading. The 11th hour attitude by council officers to making changes to the agreed infrastructure implementation strategy has caused double handling of the barricades as well as unnecessarily increasing costs, increasing the potential for damage to the Eastern Beach site and subjecting the Speed Trials team to additional work and stress.

o Budget – The situations that have arisen as above have sadly contributed towards unnecessary contention and distraction between council and us, including additional un-planned and un-necessary expense, that last year contributed to a significant budget deficit. Such a situation has never occurred before. The resolution of last year’s budget blowout severely impacted on the necessary lead-time required to stage an event this year.
o Conflicting levels of support from councillors, Major Event’s representatives and Geelong Otway Tourism - We are concerned that councillors are not being correctly briefed on the success of the Speed Trials, despite the significant amount of supporting material we present to them following an event. Some councillors and key representatives on Geelong Major Events and Geelong Otway Tourism believe that the event should not be staged at Ritchie Boulevarde. The major appeal of the Speed Trials for historic motor racing enthusiast is their ability to participate at a heritage event and a venue that is internationally recognised for both the calibre of past competitors and its location, with a history dating back to 1956.

Consequently the Speed Trials committee felt that it would be irresponsible to stage another event until these issues are satisfactorily resolved.
We are satisfied that the general community – residents, businesses and the media, have a high regard and sense of pride for the Geelong Speed Trials and that they recognise the economic impact, profile and community benefits that this heritage event traditionally generates for the Geelong region. The event is recognised as an ideal family day. Spectators are admitted free.

The event traditionally attracts some 30,000 spectators and 300 competitors into the region. It is one of very few motor racing events in the world that are still being conducted on a public road. The event enjoys a reputation for being one of the top 3 major events conducted at the Geelong waterfront precinct. The Geelong Speed Trials is a true community event, which since its inception, has been staged by a group of volunteers. All proceeds are applied to community projects via Apex.

The list of people who have competed in the Geelong Speed Trials over the years reads like a "Who's who" of motor sport. Names include Stan Jones and son Alan (who made his motor sport debut at the 1964 event). Lex Davidson, Tony Gaze, Dick Johnson, Norm Beechey, Bob Jane, Doug Whiteford, Sir Jack Brabham, Glenn Seton, Stirling Moss, Jim Richards, Tony Longhurst, Craig Lowndes, Jason Bargwanah Bryan Thomson, Win Percy, John Harvey, Johnny Herbert, Pedro Lamy, Mika Hakkinen, Kirk McCarthy, Marty Craggill, Hugh Anderson, John Woodley, Ken Wootton, Shane Soutar, Ed Miller and Joshua Brooks.

Geelong has a valuable resource in the Speed Trials Organising Committee. We believe that it would be an unforgivable situation if those things that make up the Geelong Speed Trials, including the well proven volunteer organisational base, network of sponsors, competitor & spectator following, national & international profile and the media profile that the event has, were lost to the Geelong community.

Garry Grant
Chairman, Geelong Speed Trials, August 2004.
